First Line: “‘Emmy, can you hand me that Allen wrench?’” My Musings: Jessica Sorensen may not be an author that you’ve heard off. However, now is her time to shine. As part of two separate blog tours, I have had the honor of reading two of her novels: Ember and the Secret of Ella and Micha. Sorensen is an amazing writer; her characters are well developed and her plot lines are well structured. This goes to show that though one may not have been picked up by a large publishing company, their writing can be up to par with those who have. Ember follows the life of Ember as she struggles with seeing death. That’s right–she sees how a person will die. Throughout the book, Ember struggles with this curse while getting to know about herself and her lineage. The prose is beautifully written; although the plot is creepy and mysterious, it is intriguing. However, this is not a novel that I’d recommend reading right before you go to sleep! The characters contrasted in ways unimaginable, and I loved seeing the relationships between them. Ember, although her outward appearance would exhibit otherwise, was a nice girl and it was fun watching her grow throughout the novel.
