Review: The Beautiful Ashes by Jeaniene Frost

I actually picked this book up at BEA. It seemed interesting so I was willing to give it a try. I liked the premise of this novel, what with having two people being the last descendants of ancient biblical bloodlines working together to destroy demons. Then there was the added twist that the main male, a descendant from the line of Judas, was fated to betray the last descendant of the line of David. And of course, feelings start to build between the two of them. Plot-wise, the novel was decently engaging. There was a pacing problem, about 20% in which made it practically impossible to read the book for long periods of time. At moments, I debated DNFing, but I really liked the basis of the novel and wanted to see it through. I’m glad that I did. The pacing eventually picked up and it was smooth sailing from then on. Ivy was the last descendant of the Davidian line. She was a really brave and selfless character. She got dumped into the middle of all of this while looking for her sister who was kidnapped and then was almost kidnapped by a demon herself. Ivy was very trusting but not too much to the point of stupidity. She made some mistakes in the novel and made some decisions that I didn’t agree with, but that just made her […]

Review: Zoey Rogue by Lizzy Ford

“‘Rule one: don’t ever draw your weapons on me again. Rule two: don’t ever lie to me again,’ Zoey recited. ‘Rule three: know the difference between where you play and where you sleep.’” “‘Strike three. You’re mine,’ he whispered.” I had never read a novel about Incubi and Succubi so the synopsis hooked me right from the start. Zoey Rogue was definitely a unique novel for me. It was full of action. It followed Zoey, a half Succubus, who rescues girls from the clutches of the Incubatti, the Succubus male counterpart. On a mission, she is rescued by Declan, the head of the Incubatti Enforcers, and he is determined to make her his. However, Zoey is not one to be tamed. Thus, hilarious and cute antics occur as they try to deny the chemistry flowing between them. This novel had its exciting moments paired with its more serious moments. Zoey was always on the move and that made things interesting. Yet there were times of lesser action, times when they were trying to resist the pull between them. Those were not boring by any means and I rather enjoyed them but they were not as thrilling as the action-y parts either. Regardless, it was the perfect balance. “She was quiet, searching his gaze. ‘If you need me to kill anyone for you, I will.’ Declan laughed, not expecting the offer. […]

Review: Darkside Sun by Jocelyn Adams

“Denial was a wonderful thing, like a rain slicker to keep the deluge of crazy from soaking too deep into my skin.” “‘And I’m really not going to hurt you the way you think I am.’ ‘You don’t pick up a dagger like that near a runecovered altar with shackles on it unless you intend to carve me up like a sacrificial lamb, so cut the crap, Asher.’” I’m not exactly sure. I just sounded like something unlike anything I’ve ever read. “The room had sacrificial chamber written all over it, with ancient carved circular rock walls, a stone floor with a drain in the center, shelves upon shelves heavy with old things I had no name for, and the last, a stone object I could only call an altar. Honest to goodness shackles hung from either end of it. A freakin’ altar, and me in my virgin sacrifice outfit.” The plot of this novel was the hitter. Adams crafted an intricate sequence of events that started on the first page of the novel. Addison can see thing, things that other people can’t, and for years has been pretending that she was normal. But when one of her episodes leads to her being late to Professor Asher Green’s class, things take a turn. Asher turns out being part of the Mortal Machine–a group of immortals that protect the world from […]
