Review: Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Hunter. Hunter. HUNTER. Man oh man Jennifer knows how to write male characters that you know you should find attractive, but definitely do. Hell, she made ALIENS hot. Okay? Aliens. Um… HOW? Now I know I gave Obsession a five star rating, but let me be clear; the plot was so cliche it was tacky. Girl has normal life, girl gets thrown into supernatural world where she meets hot guy *in swaggers Hunter* who is forced to protect her, girl falls for boy even though she shouldn’t, boy eventually falls for girl and becomes a better man, they live (relatively) happily ever after after a bunch of crazy sh*t goes down. It was entertaining, cliche as it was. But it was Jennifer L. Armentrout, so… As Hazel Grace Lancaster would say to her favourite author, “Frankly, I’d read your grocery lists.” JLA is my go-to gal for entertaining, amazing love stories, and will continue to be until I’ve read every single word she’s written. Probably even after that. #reread The romance was… hot. From the very beginning, the moment Hunter and Serena met, he made his intentions crystal clear. Which I’m still debating if I liked or not. I mean it’s good to know what you want and to go after what you want, but he… he was… well, Hunter. He was forward, to the point, and all consuming. Their romance was […]

Mini-Review: Until Midnight by Melissa Landers

Mini-Review: Until Midnight by Melissa Landers

Check out my review of Alienated (Alienated #1) Until Midnight was a short story that bridges the time between Alienated, the first book in the Alienated series, and Invaded, book two. Aelyx and Cara have twenty-four hours until he is sent back to Earth and Cara travels on to L’eihr. To make that special night special, Aelyx sets up a Christmas celebration for Cara. Until Midnight was deliciously adorable. I loved seeing Aelyx and Cara together. It was extremely sweet to see Aelyx trying to recreate the Earth-holiday to make Cara happy. It was also just the right dose of them to tide me over until book two! I though it set a good stage to get Invaded off to a great start. It made me a lot more excited to see more of them, especially with the four chapter preview of Invaded. Until Midnight was a cute Christmasy read that was just nice enough touch for Aelyx and Cara that has me pining for book two. And the best part? This short is free! So pick it up while you can and enjoy the Christmasy cuteness. About Melissa Landers Melissa Landers is a former teacher who left the classroom to pursue other worlds. A proud sci-fi geek, she isn’t afraid to wear her Princess Leia costume in public—just ask her husband and three kids. She lives outside Cincinnati in […]

Review: Alienated by Melissa Landers

“‘How does he look at me?’ Tori raised a black brow. Then she made a circle with one hand and stuck her index finger through it in an X-rated puppet show. ‘Like he wants to dock his ship inside your spaceport.’” “He reached down and took her hand. His long fingers were stiff, but he laced them between hers and tightened his grip, fusing their palms together in a mesmerizing contrast of skin. Cara stared at their intertwined hands and went a little gooey inside. ‘You don’t have to do this,’ she said. ‘I know you hate it.’ ‘Quite the opposite.’ He smiled down at her. ‘Consoling you brings me comfort. Listening to you cry while I’m trapped on the other side of the wall is what I can’t stand.’” The premise of aliens kind of reminded me of Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux series. And i had heard wonderful things about it. This novel follows Cara Sweeny, one of the three students in the United States chosen to host students from an alien planet for a few months at her house. She thinks of it as a fantastic was to get a leap on becoming a journalist. But Aelyx, the exchange student from L’eihr, has other plans. The teens on his planet think that humans are pathetic, and they come up with a way to sabotage the alliance that the humans […]

Review: Quicksilver Dreams by Danube Adele

“Life is so weird. You just never know what the next day is going to bring.” “He really and truly needed me. Me. This big, powerful warrior wanted me.” Okay honestly? Because it’s an alien book. You don’t get too many of those now-a-days, and it just sounded interesting. It had secret agents and aliens. What more can you ask for? Quicksilver Dreams was filled to the brim with action and danger. Lots of things went on in this novel, ranging from evil aliens trying to kill Taylor, from Taylor and Ryder fighting their attraction, to Ryder being iffy about Taylor because he thinks she’s a traitor. There was definitely never a dull moment in this novel. “His light eyes bore into mine. I could see the puffiness of his lip, as well as a dried fleck of blood. I’d done that? For a moment I stared at the evidence, in awe of myself. I truly was a badass. Then I confused myself because I also wanted to kiss it better. I never said I was consistent.” Taylor was our female protagonist, an almost-adult making her way in life in Hollywood. She’s escaped and come from nothing, and she does anything and everything she needs to to make sure she’s independent. She really took the things that were thrown at her in this novel well, proving how tough-minded she was. […]

Review: Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Check out my review of Shadows (Lux #0.5) Check out my review of Obsidian (Lux #1) Check out my review of Onyx (Lux #2) Favorite Quote(s): “‘I love you, Katy. Always have. Always will.’” “’He…he kisses like he’s dying of thirst, and I’m water.’ I smacked my hands over my hot face. ‘I can’t believe I just said that out loud.’ Lesa giggled. ‘Sounds like one of those romance books you read.’ ‘It does.’ I started giggling. ‘But, oh Lordie Lord, it’s true. I’m like a puddle of mush when he kisses me. It’s embarrassing. I’m so, like, ‘Thank you, can I have another?’ Sad.’” “’You haven’t been smiling much. I missed it, so I decided to reward you for doing it.’  ‘Reward me?’ I laughed. ‘God, only you would think kissing someone is a reward.’  ‘You know it is. My lips change lives, baby.’” Favorite Character: Daemon. You will see why in the following rant-like musings! First Line: “I wasn’t sure what woke me.” My Musings: Oh..oh my god. Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod. My hands are shaking so badly right now I can barely type this up. This book…it changed my life. No lies. I just…there aren’t words to explain it. That ending…ohmygod. I can’t…I can’t believe that…what happened…that cliffhanger…I need Origin right now. Or I will spontaneously combust. Jennifer has done it again…except this one tops them all. I’m […]

Review: Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Check out my review of Shadows (Lux #0.5) Check out my review of Obsidian (Lux #1) Favorite Quote(s): There are just too many! “What are we going to do kitten?” My toes curled at the deep octave of his voice. “I don’t know.” “I have a few ideas.” I cracked a grin. “I’m sure you do.” “Wanna hear about them? Although, I’m much better at the show part rather than the tell.” “Somehow, I believe you.” “If you didn’t, I could always give you a teaser.” He paused, and I could hear the smile in his voice. “You bookish people love teasers, don’t you?” “‘Oh, I still want to strangle you. But i’m insane. You’re crazy. Maybe that’s why. We just make crazy together.’” “‘You didn’t come straight home after school.’ Annoyance colored his tone. Like he was my own screwed-up, super-hot version of the Secret Service and I’d managed to evade him.” Favorite Character: Daemon. Need I explain? First Line: “Ten seconds passed between when Daemon Black took his seat and when he poked me under the shoulder blade with his trusty pen.” My Musings: I’ve been trying to write this review for a few hours now, thinking about all that i’d say, and how to put my thoughts into words; I finally figured out that it is impossible–no words can describe how amazing this book was. I had high expectations […]

Review: Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Favorite Quote(s): “The stuff was like a nuclear time bomb in a bottle. Toss it and watch it go boom.” “He screamed for the first time in his life, really let lose like a pansy, but damn, the Arum got him.” Favorite Character: Dawson. His sarcasm and wit reminded me severely of Daemon. And he looks identical. Who wouldn’t love him? First Line: “A shadow glided over the frozen hills, moving too quick to likely be cast by something of this Earth.” My Musings: Jennifer has done it again. She managed to completely captivate me and insert me into the tale of Bethany and Dawson. It was a refreshing as well as informative read–It gave us more insight into the working of the Luxen world, showed us the past of the triplets and why Daemon is the way that he is, and gave us a great story all in one! This novel started right in the middle of the action: we;re introduced to the leading man, Dawson, as he struggles against an Arum. This type of beginning immediately captures your interest. It’s page turning from the beginning. Also, I love Jennifer’s writing style. All of her books are written in a way that is relatable. The characters talk , like modern day teens, think like modern day teens, and act like modern day teens. The sarcasm apparent throughout this novel was hilarious. Dawson’s character especially. I […]

Review: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Check out my review of Shadows (Lux #0.5) Favorite Quote(s):  “My lips pressed into a hard line. ‘You’re such an ass. Has…anyone ever told you that?’ He flashed a genuinely amused smile. ‘Oh, Kitten, every single day of my blessed life.’” “‘We aren’t weak. And you’re on our planet. How about a little respect, buddy.’” Favorite Character: I’m going to have to go with Daemon as my favorite character. Although he was a total douchebag most of the book, he had this certain vulnerability that pulled you in. Like Katy, I totally fell for him by the second chapter. His sarcasm and teasing is witty and there were a lot of laugh aloud moments for me. There was never a dull moment with Daemon in the picture! First Line:  “I stared at the pile of boxes in my new bedroom, wishing the Internet had been hooked up.” My Musings: Oh gosh…This book absolutely blew me away. I’m pretty certain that it just bumped Sing me to Sleep out of its first place spot on my favorite books list. At first I had a few doubts about the book–who really wants to read about aliens? I have to say though, I am extremely glad that I bought this book. Armentrout’s idea of writing about aliens was brilliant–and the fact that Daemon was not hard on the eyes was a complete bonus! So, Katy has just […]
