Mini-Review: Draw Me In by Regina Cole

Draw Me In was an okay contemporary read. It was not anything super special. It followed the typical NA trope: girl meets boy, one of the two or both have baggage, they get together, crap hits the fan, and then they work it out and get back together. And this novel followed that exactly. I, for the most part, enjoyed Hailey’s character. She was likable and relatable. She was trying to do what was best for her to reach her dreams regardless of the family issues she was dealing with. She was admirable. Neill was not. He was a coward, plain and simple. He shied away from their possible relationship at every turn. And the cause of that? You guessed it—he has baggage from a previous relationship. A druggie ex-girlfriend that took advantage of the things he offered. And so he projects the fears and feelings from that relationship onto Hailey. It felt really weird for me, the roles reversed, because often it is the girl who does that exact thing: not trust a guy because they’ve been hurt before. Although it showed a vulnerable side to Neill’s character it quickly got old and annoying. His character made it hard to really and truly enjoy this novel.
