Review: School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins

Favorite Quote(s)*: “‘You are my new hero. Seriously, I might actually be in love with you now. Would it be awkward if we made out?’” Favorite Character: Dex. He was funny and unique and definitely not your typical boy—it made me love him all the more! First Line*: “Killing a vampire is actually a lot easier than you’d think.” My Musings: Rachel Hawkins became a favorite author of mine after I had the pleasure of reading the Hex Hall series. And just as I fell in love with that series’ characters and plot, the same has happened with her new novel. School Spirits was an intriguing mix of hilarity and action, with your needed dosage of romance. I can honestly say that it is everything that I was expecting—and more. I really enjoyed the story line of this novel. It was interesting to see the life of the Brannicks, especially after we were exposed to who they were in the Hex Hall series. I loved seeing the other side of the Prodiguim world that Rachel Hawkins has created. The plot of this novel was interesting and captivating. Set mostly in a high school setting, it was fun to watch Izzy adapt to regular life. And the tie in of a ghost haunting the high school? Genius. Review: Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins

Favorite Quote(s):  “‘Um…Mercer? Haven’t seen you in nearly a month. I was expecting something like, ‘Oh Cross, love of my heart, fire of my loins, how I’ve longed–”” “Archer shrugged. ‘We’ve tried to kill each other, fought ghouls, and kissed a lot. I’m pretty sure we’re married in some cultures.’” Favorite Character: Archer. His sarcasm and wit kept me laughing throughout the entire book. First Line:  “There are times when magic really sucks.” My musings: Wow! Where to start? It took me about 5 hours to read this book—it was impossible to put down! It starts off with Sophie coming to in the middle of the forest. After a confrontation with a were and getting beat to the ground by a 12 (excuse me, 14) year old, Sophie finds herself at the Brannicks compound. From then on, it’s an action packed course as Sophie tries to save the world from Lara and her demon army. I have been anticipating reading this book ever since I finished the first novel, Hex Hall. Hawkins’ writing is captivating and variegated—there is almost never a dull moment! The characters were well rounded, and you were able to see the transitions in personality and leadership in not only Sophie, but Archer, cal, and Jenna as well. I absolutely loved Sophie and Jenna’s relationship. I adored their constant banter and teasing, as well as them being there for each other […]
