Review: The Summer of Jake by Rachel Bailey

The Summer of Jake follows Annalise and Jake. Annalise had been in love with her best friend’s brother Jake for years. She is surprised when Jake calls her out of the blue and needs her help to impress another girl. However, the more time that they spend on this mission, the more Annalise’s feelings reemerge and the more Jake begins to feel for her. Unfortunately, due to Jake’s father’s background in booze and failing relationships, Jake is discouraged to take a chance on Annalise. Will he take that leap or will their feelings for each other fade? The Summer of Jake was your typical cutesy summer read. It wasn’t anything spectacular but it definitely wasn’t boring. It kept my interest for the majority of the novel. The pacing was a bit slow at time which tempered with my interest but for the most part, I enjoyed following Annalis and Jake’s story. Annalise was a designer who was fired on her birthday. So when Jake offered her a deal she couldn’t resist: putting her designs in his surf shops, she was all for it no matter what her feelings for him. In my opinion, Annalise wore her heart on her sleeve and that made her both more vulnerable and likable. I really enjoyed her character. She was really relatable in her personality and attitude.
