Release Day Launch Review: Business as Usual by Denise Grover Swank

Check out my review of After Math (Off the subject #1) Check out my review of Redesigned (Off the Subject #2) “‘What else?’ ‘It’s all business with you, isn’t it, curly?’ I take a sip to prove I’m following the rules. ‘I am a business major.’ ‘Well, business as usual then.’ She laughs.”  “‘You wear me out, Ben Masterson.’ He leans over me, propped on his elbow. ‘Consider me your personal trainer.’” I just had to sign up for the release day launch after reading the other two companion novels in this series. I’ve been waiting for Lexi’s story for a while! “‘You didn’t do anything wrong.’ I try to laugh, but it hurts my head. ‘I was stupid. Something very, very bad could have happened to me.’ And when I let myself think about what could have happened, I feel nauseated. ‘Thank you,’ I say and it seems too inadequate. Ben saved me from being raped, I’m positive of it. I’m not sure I could emotionally survive something like that again. I know Reed couldn’t.” Business as Usual follows Lexi Pendergraft as she deals with the psychological aftermath of her rape. It begins with Lexi breaking up with her boyfriend because she freaks out during sex. After then, Lexi decides that she is going to shun relationships for a while. But at a bar one night after a play […]

Review: The Curse Keepers by Denise Grover Swank

Favorite Quote(s):  “My eyes widened in disbelief. ‘Where did you learn that?’ ‘Casing the Joint 101 at the school for Mischief and Shenaniganry, of course. I think I passed you in the hall on the way to Entrapping the Eligible Billionaire Bachelor.’”  “‘You must be an enchantress. You have me under your spell.’ He kissed me this time, making my pulse rise. ‘And what does that make you?’ I teased. ‘Yours.’” Favorite Character: Ellie I suppose. First Line: “The moment I laid my eyes on him, I knew he was trouble.” My Musings: I absolutely adored Denise Grover Swank’s Off the Subject series, so when I saw this novel on Netgalley, I couldn’t help but request it. Although it was a completely different genre than the Off the Subject series, I knew that it wouldn’t let me down. The Curse Keepers has a very interesting premise: a curse that was set long ago, that resulting in the disappearance of the Roanoke colony. The curse has been passed down until the two curse keepers of the two lines met, and opened the gate. They would then have seven days to close it and save the world from the spirits that were behind it. Enter Collin and Ellie. The two curse keepers from the two lines. When Collin shows up at the little diner that Ellie works at, all of the air is […]

Review: Redesigned by Denise Grover Swank

Check out my review of After Math (Off the Subject #1) Favorite Quote(s): “‘Are you calling me the Antichrist?’ I laugh again. ‘I wouldn’t go that far.’ ‘Then maybe you could have a chat with some of my Algebra 101 students and convince them otherwise.’ He laughs. ‘But then again, maybe it’s better if they have the fear of God in them.’ ‘Or in this case, I think you mean the fear of Satan.’” “He leans over, and his lips hover over mine. ‘Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder.’ I laugh. ‘That is not how that platitude goes.’” “His lips press in mock annoyance. ‘I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I’m a nerdy math guy. We’re not hip to the lingo.’” Favorite Character: Reed. I’m all for a hot, nerdy math guy! First Line: “I push damp hair off my forehead, irritated with the heat.” My Musings: I was recently a part of this release day launch, along with previously having participated in the release day launch of this book’s companion novel, After Math (review here). I was ecstatic when Inkslinger Pr granted me a review copy of this novel. Seeing as I loved After Math so much, I was excited to see what else Swank could cook up. And let me say; this novel was a perfect literary feast for me. Redesigned follows Caroline, the best friend of After Math s protagonist, Scarlett. Like […]

Review: After Math by Denise Grover Swank

Favorite Quote(s): “‘The thing about rules is that they can keep you safe, but box you in so you can’t truly live life. We’ll have to find a way to meet in the middle.’” Favorite Character: Tucker. He’s sweet and vulnerable and just overall cute. First Line: “I’m late.” My Musings: There are many books out there that make you feel things. Feel anger, feel sorrow, feel happiness. Denise Grover Swank’s After Math did just that for me. Swank crafted an exceptional novel full of emotion, healing, and pain. This novel is truly one of the best indie books that I have read. The writing was eloquent and flowed perfectly. The writing itself was descriptive, and that paired with a fantastic plot was the recipe for success. I enjoyed what the book covered: anxiety, depression, and letting go of the past. All of the thoughts and feelings of the characters regarding those topics were realistic in a way that you don’t see much in New adult writing, especially when the author themselves haven’t gone through it. The believability of this novel was sheer amazing. I had no doubt that this could have happened in the actual past. The thing that stood out most to me about this novel was the deep development of the characters. These characters had so much to them, making them unique in their own ways. Scarlett […]
